Interprofessional Journal Club: A health professionals collaborative between CHSU and Fresno State

INTERPROFESSIONAL JOURNAL CLUB: A healthcare professionals collaborative between CHSU and Fresno State Will there be FOOD? YES! There will be LUNCH provided for all registered attendees. Please invite your classmates, faculty and preceptors to join you, and make sure they register so that we can have an accurate headcount for food. Who is invited to join? Students, faculty and healthcare practitioners from California Health Sciences University (CHSU) and Fresno State are invited to participate in the Interprofessional Journal Club collaborative.  Which healthcare professions are involved? Any healthcare related discipline or major, such pharmacy, nursing, kinesiology, public health, speech language pathology, physical therapy, social work, dietetics and recreation administration. What will we do? This is not a traditional boring journal club where people sit and judge someone's PowerPoint presentation! We will have interactive discussions so that we can foster real learning from, with and about each other's roles and contributions to the team dynamic of patient care. We will read and evaluate together medical literature and journal articles about topics relevant to the patients we serve in the Central Valley, share experiences and challenges related to caring for underserved people populations, and build interprofessional skills and connections so we can work collaboratively to elevate patient care for people living in the Central Valley. We will also create and publish together a patient health education newsletter to distribute to local low-income/community health clinics, with the goals of improving health literacy, patient knowledge of local resources, and public awareness of clinical skills and services of various healthcare professions. For the 2019-2020 school year, the focus of our learning will be on substance use disorders, and how we as healthcare professionals can help those who are struggling with addiction. Where will the meetings be held? California Health Sciences University in Clovis. When are the meetings? SECOND Saturday of every month during the school year. Why should I join? Anticipated Benefits for Participants Learn interdisciplinary communication skills; Understand of the roles and scopes of practice of other healthcare professionals; Develop mutual trust and respect for other healthcare professionals; Improve relationships with other health professionals; Feel more empowered to contribute during clinical rounds; Improve patient communication skills by practicing patient-friendly terminology in developing patient education newsletter; Improve critical analytical and clinical decision-making skills from evaluating journal articles;  Increase marketability.
